Austin Jeweler C. Kirk Root Dies

C. Kirk Root, an Austin, Texas, jeweler and accomplished appraiser, died Jan. 8 of cancer. He was 52.

A 1981 graduate of the Texas Institute of Jewelry Technology, he opened C. Kirk Root Designs in 1989. In 2000, his designs were chosen in a statewide contest to become the official pins and rings of the Texas Legislature, according to the store’s website.

C. Kirk Root, an Austin, Texas, jeweler and accomplished appraiser, died Jan. 8 of cancer. He was 52.

Jewelry Theft Gangs Smart and Patient, ATF Agent Says

The South American theft gangs that prey on jewelry couriers are among the more methodical criminals out there, according to James Liscinsky, a senior special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. 

“They are the most proficient, intelligent criminals I have ever dealt with,” he says. “They are very patient and they are aware of law enforcement, and that makes them difficult to catch.”

Canadian Miner Will Sell Gems Online

Canadian miner Dominion Diamond Corp. plans online sales of CanadaMark-branded gems, its spokesman confirmed to JCK. 

The site will be business-to-business, said spokesman Richard Chetwode, and its launch is planned around the JCK Show in Las Vegas.
